Hello. My name is Ange Jackson, and this beautiful smile that you see before you is all because of Volunteer for Dental.I moved to Michigan in December of 2016, when my husband was medically retired from the Army. We were lucky to keep our medical insurance; however, his separation meant the lost of our dental insurance. As luck would have it, I had an existing cavity fall out of my tooth almost immediately after losing my coverage.I was unemployed, had anxiety about visiting the dentist, no dental insurance, and embarrassment about allowing myself to go too long without receiving dental care. I felt a bit trapped. I suffered with the pain for quite some time until I realized I had to do something.I heard about Volunteer for Dental from Andy O’Riley’s Positively Muskegon. I placed a call in to volunteer For Dental before I could talk myself out of it.I talked to Suzanne and was enrolled pretty quickly. After my class, I was able to collect volunteer hours for volunteer work at Catholic Charities- a place where I had already been volunteering at for weeks. Since the beginning of my volunteer time, I have also volunteered for Pioneer Resources with their Leisure And Recreation Club and at community outreach events for Volunteer For Dental.Since joining the program, I have volunteered a total of 90 hours in our community. These hours have provided me with x-rays, an exam, periodontal care, fillings and soon I will have a root canal redone. Not only is all of this work being done at no cost for me, but it is being done by wonderful providers. These are providers that I would recommend to my friends and family. In addition to bettering my dental hygiene and correcting my bad soda habits, it is because of Volunteer for Dental that I am now currently employed. Suzanne was there for me when I was unemployed, and helped me find my current position as a Federal Volunteer.I want to thank all of you who have supported this cause. I do not know what I would have done without all of you.
