It makes me feel like a million bucks if I can help someone who is struggling too.
Hello, my name is Vickie and I’m honored to be able to participate in the Volunteer for Dental program. I’m 62 years old and have been married for 38 years. I have 2 sons, 4 stepchildren and 13 grandchildren. I’m disabled with chronic kidney stones and many other health issues. I worked for 13 years as a cook for Orchard View Schools. I had to give up my job because of my health. My husband is handicapped so I spend a lot of time helping him and taking him to doctors. We do not have dental insurance and do not have money to pay for dental work. Ten years ago I had periodontal disease and started losing my teeth so I needed dental work right away. I had to have an upper denture made and we made payments for a long time before they were mine. Now the upper denture has problems: the back teeth are worn off completely which makes it hard to chew some foods, some of the teeth are chipped, some are discolored and they don’t fit anymore. I have volunteered for a long time at MAP. I try to work at MAP about 3-4 times a month doing office work, newsletters or pantry help. I love helping with whatever I can do. I have continued to volunteer because of the big hugs and smiles I get from those we help. I’ve been down and out and still am at times. It makes me feel like a million bucks if I can help someone who is struggling too. Diane Stubbs, the Director at MAP is the person who got me started at Volunteer for Dental. Suzanne and her staff are so nice and helpful. They gave me hope that one day I would have my smile back. I go to Dr. Leitner in Grand Haven and he and his staff are so nice and caring about my anxiety and about dentists in general. They make your visit so calming and pleasant, which I didn’t think was possible! I have also had some dental surgery done by Dr. Cardon and was surprised that he and his staff made me feel relaxed and comfortable too! When your teeth don’t look good, you don’t smile. When you don’t smile you don’t feel good about yourself. I can’t tell you how happy I am with this great program. With the help of Mission for Area People and Volunteer For Dental I’m now getting a new upper denture and a new partial made for me. I feel so much better about myself! Thank you for giving me my smile back!
